Spencer Turnbull was stingy as they come on Tuesday. Turnbull gave a performance of a lifetime as he threw his first no-hitter, leading the Detroit Lions to a stirring 5-0 victory against the Seattle Mariners.

On a perfect evening, Turnbull tossed a 117-pitch masterpiece on the road at T-Mobile Park. It was only the eighth no-hitter in Tigers history and the first one in a decade.

But wait, there’s more! According to ESPN Statistics and Information, Turnbull’s no-hitter also helped set an MLB milestone. It is only the second season in league history that five no-hitters have been recorded before the month of June. Turnbull joined Baltimore Orioles’ John Means, San Diego Padres’ Joe Musgrove, Cincinnati Reds’ Wade Miley, and Chicago White Sox’s Carlos Rodon.

Spencer Turnbull’s no-hitter is the 5th of the season.

It’s just the 2nd season in MLB history with 5 no-hitters before June (5 in 1917)

The 28-year-old Turnbull finished the first eight innings in 100 pitches, including a whopping 65 strikes. Mitch Haniger, who already had 12 home runs prior to facing the Tigers, made the final out after he got blanked after the foul tip to catcher Eric Haase.
Turnbull, in his fourth season with the Tigers, finished with nine strikeouts and just two walks against the Mariners—Jarred Kelenic and Jose Marmolejos in the fourth and ninth innings, respectively.

It’s the first no-hitter for the Tigers since Justin Verlander did it in 2011 against the Toronto Blue Jays. The team needs more diamond brilliance though to improve on its 16-26 record, second to the last in AL Central. Well, Spencer Turnbull’s latest feat could be the start of something big.

[ad_2]
