Protestors have blockaded four major distribution centres which supply around 1,300 McDonald’s restaurantsMcDonald’s distribution centres which supply around 1,300 restaurants have been blockaded by animal rights protestors demanding the chain goes vegan.

Around 50,000 members of Animal Rebellion have descended on four of the fast food giant’s major sites in a bid to persuade it to introduce a fully plant-based menu by 2025.

Members of the volunteer movement say they intend to cause ‘significant disruption’ by remaining at the centres in Hemel Hempstead, Basingstoke, Coventry and Heywood in Greater Manchester.

The group said on Twitter this morning how they were waiting for McDonald’s bosses to talk to them – and warned the blockade would continue all day if necessary.

Protestors are using trucks and bamboo structures to prevent lorries leaving the sites.

Animal rebellion spokesperson, James Ozden, told how the action aims to call out the animal agriculture industry for their contribution to the global climate crisis.

‘The meat and dairy industry is destroying our planet: causing huge amounts of rainforest deforestation, emitting immense quantities of greenhouse gases and killing billions of animals each year,’ Mr Ozden said.

‘The only sustainable and realistic way to feed ten billion people is with a plant-based food system.

The group tweeted this morning: ‘There’s no McCafe on a dead planet,’ calling on people to ‘act now’.

One protestor at the Coventry blockade described McDonald’s actions as ‘horrendous’. ‘

UPDATE: COVENTRY BLOCKADE REBEL.“This feels like absolutely the right thing to do. We’re in the middle of a climate and ecological emergency but we’re eating huge amounts of meat. It’s unsustainable.” Well said! 🙏💚🌍🐮@McDonaldsUK we’re waiting for your reply. #plantbased pic.twitter.com/uxmkplOCjm— Animal Rebellion (@RebelsAnimal) May 22, 2021

‘We’re in the middle of a climate and ecological emergency and we’re still consuming huge quantities of meat on a scale that is just not sustainable for our plant.

‘We need a diet that is plant[-based and not reliant on industrial farming, not reliant on the suffering of animals and the exploitation of workers.’
