\nState-owned Correos Espana this week issued a set of four stamps in different skin-coloured tones, introduced on the anniversary of George Floyld\u2019s murder.
\nBut people weren\u2019t too happy to learn that the lightest colour ones were the most expensive, selling at 1.60 euros (\u00a31.37), compared to 0.70 euros (60p) for the darkest.
\nThe postal service said the stamps \u2018reflect an unfair and painful reality that shouldn\u2019t be allowed\u2019 and that every letter or parcel sent with them would \u2018send a message against racial inequality\u2019.
\nBut while the goal of Correos Espana was to \u2018promote diversity, inclusion and equal rights\u2019, critics have accused the company of having a tin ear for racial issues and misreading the sentiment of black people in Spain.
\nAntumi Toasije, a historian who heads the government\u2019s Council for the Elimination of Racial or Ethnic Discrimination, urged the postal service to stop selling the stamps.

\nThe postal service\u2019s initiative has divided Spanish anti-racism activists. While the national SOS Racism Federation backed it, the organisation\u2019s Madrid section poured scorn on the effort.
\nCorreos Espana\u2019s campaign was launched during European Diversity Month in collaboration with Spain\u2019s national SOS Racism Federation.

It said the campaign helps conceal the structural nature of racism and perpetuates the notion of black inferiority.
\nThe Madrid division added that the blunder proved the need for more racially aware people in decision-making positions at companies.
\nThis is not the first time the Spanish postal service has sought to make a statement on social issues.
\nLast June, to coincide with LGBT Pride Month, it issued a special stamp and painted its delivery vans and mail boxes in rainbow colours.
