Philadelphia Phillies ace Aaron Nola tied New York Mets icon Tom Seaver’s MLB record for consecutive strikeouts in a game. Ironically, he accomplished the feat in a start against the Mets at Citi Field.

After opening up his outing by hitting Mets leadoff hitter Jeff McNeil with a pitch and surrendering a double to shortstop Francisco Lindor, Nola struck out the next 10 Mets batters he faced, which tied Seaver’s 51-year old feat.

In order, the Phillies right-hander fanned:

Michael Conforto

Pete Alonso

Dominic Smith

James McCann

Kevin Pillar

Luis Guillorme

Taijuan Walker

McNeil

Lindor

Conforto

With one out in the bottom of the 4th inning, Nola’s streak ended when he allowed a double to Alonso. He then induced a Smith groundout before striking out catcher McCann to end the inning with 11 Ks on 66 pitches.

Yet, the Phillies were unable to take advantage of Nola’s record-setting dominance. Through four innings, the Phillies’ had zero runs on two hits — with one coming from Nola. Then, in the top of the 5th, Nola took matters further into his own hands, driving in catcher J.T. Realmuto to put Philadelphia up 1-0.

The NL East rivals are playing a double-header of 7-inning games on Friday. The Phillies (34-37) entered the pivotal four-game weekend series in Queens trailing the first-place Mets (38-31) by 5 games.

Like his team, Nola has had an underwhelming first-third of the 2021 season. Through 15 starts, he’s 5-4 with a 4.22 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. He ranked 23rd in baseball in strikeouts per 9 innings (10.0), though that number will go up after Friday’s performance.

On April 22, 1970, the late Hall of Famer Tom Seaver struck out the final 10 batters(!) of his 19-strikeout masterpiece vs. the San Diego Padres.
