If you think the 2021 NBA Playoffs is no longer fun to watch just because two of the league’s most marketable stars like LeBron James and Stephen Curry are no longer in contention, then perhaps let Utah Jazz scoring machine Donovan Mitchell convince you to gravitate back to watching the games.
Speaking to the media after the Jazz took down the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinals series last Tuesday, Mitchell admitted that he’s been seeing people talk about how the playoffs isn’t that interesting like it was in past years, with no Kobe Bryant, LeBron, or Curry for the first time in 15 years, but gave a reason why fans should still be thrilled to follow the postseason.
Via David Aldridge of The Athletic:
“I see it, I’m not going to lie,” Mitchell continued. “I see the tweets (about the new blood in these playoffs). We all do. The best thing about it is, that’s what makes these games so competitive. The Clippers – correct me if I’m wrong – have never won a championship. We’ve never won one. Phoenix has never won one. You look at how competitive these games are, I think that’s what makes this playoffs so intense, so exciting.”
The Jazz star is definitely not wrong on this one. It can get pretty exciting to watch franchises that have not tasted a parade downtown go at it in the playoffs. It’s practically a wide-open race now.
And to confirm what he said, the Clippers have indeed not won an NBA championship yet just like the Jazz, who famously lost in back-to-back years to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the late 90s.
