Assane Diop is set to return in Lupin Part 3 (Picture: Emmanuel Guimier)Following the release of Lupin Part 2 on Netflix, the creator of the French crime caper has explained why it won’t be following in the footsteps of Call My Agent! with a UK remake.
Last month, it was announced that French comedy-drama Call My Agent! was being adapted for an English version of the show, starring Oscar-winning actor Jim Broadbent and Pirates of the Caribbean star Jack Davenport.
A Turkish iteration of the programme has also been released, while a South Korean adaptation is currently in development.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, George Kay, who co-created Lupin with François Uzan, said that he would be ‘surprised’ if an English remake came to fruition, as a significant aspect of Lupin is the fact that it is set in France.
Lupin follows a master burglar called Assane Diop (Omar Sy), who takes inspiration from French literary character Arsène Lupin, a gentleman thief, when carrying out his daring escapades.
‘I think there’s a difference between Call My Agent and Lupin in that Call My Agent has a sort of entertainment industry format that can be recreated in the UK, LA. You can imagine those agent and client shows – in fact, there have been those shows in the US and the UK. Whereas Lupin is so rooted in France,’ George said.

‘What’s happened with Lupin is that lots of people are watching with subtitles or are happy to watch it dubbed and it sort of spread quite naturally. So because we wanted to make a series about France, it would be hard to imagine a non-French version,’ he said.
George outlined how at the beginning when they first started making Lupin, one of the biggest challenges he faced was the fact that he wrote the shooting scripts in English from start to finish, which were then translated.
Nonetheless, other members of the production, including the show’s star Omar – who became ‘more involved with the scripts’ as time went on – all spoke English, enabling George to work smoothly with the team.
Before Part 2 was released, it had already been confirmed that Lupin would be returning for Part 3.
While speaking to Metro.co.uk, George teased that the next instalment will mark a ‘fresh start’ in the series, while also welcoming several ‘new characters’ alongside familiar faces.

George said that there are ‘no immediate plans’ to include a new character inspired by Sherlock Holmes – or Herlock Sholmes, the character included in Maurice Leblanc’s Arsène Lupin books.
Nonetheless, he added: ‘If anyone was to appear from a Sherlock Holmes perspective it would be a fan of Sherlock Holmes, in a way that Assane is a fan of Arsène Lupin.’ That sounds like a grand plan to us!
