Sir Tom Jones left The One Show’s Alex Jones looking visibly emotional as he recounted what his late wife Linda Trenchard said to him in her final days before her death.
In 2016, Linda, who was Sir Tom’s high school girlfriend, died at the age of 75 after suffering from lung cancer.
The couple’s son, Mark Woodward, was born in 1957, the same year they were married.
During an appearance on BBC’s The One Show, The Voice UK coach Sir Tom outlined how the songs on his new album Surrounded by Time are each ‘telling a different part of my life’.
The Welsh singer, 80, explained that the first song on the album, I Won’t Crumble With You If You Fall, took him back to when his late wife Linda ‘was passing away’ from lung cancer.
‘I was there in the hospital room with her for the last 10 days and I said, “My god Linda, I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself because I won’t be able to sing, I won’t be able to get the words out.” She said: “You must!”’ he recollected.

Continuing to recall the conversation he had with Linda, he stated: ‘But she said: “I’ve just ran out of time. But you’ve got to go and do it now.”

Sir Tom said that he didn’t know how he would be able to sing without Linda (Picture: David M. Benett/Dave Benett/Getty Images)‘And she said: “But when you get on the stage, think of me laughing. Don’t think of me as I am now. Think of all the years we’ve had together and that should lift you up.” Which it does.’
The One Show presenter Alex appeared very taken by the moving story, placing a hand on her heart as she exchanged a glance with her co-host Michael Ball.
One viewer tweeted that they were sending Sir Tom a ‘virtual cwtch’, with ‘cwtch’ meaning a cuddle or a hug in Welsh.
During a recent interview with The Sun, the It’s Not Unusual singer admitted that he didn’t think he would be able to survive his late wife’s death.

‘I honestly didn’t think I was going to get through it,’ he said.
‘I had to go and see a grief therapist because I kept thinking, “Did I do enough? Was I on the case? Did she slip away without me really realising what was happening?”’
The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
