1 undrafted free agent who will make the Packers’ 2021 roster

The Green Bay Packers have gone through a crazy, drama-filled offseason full of Aaron Rodgers rumors and gloom and doom media takes. Brian Gutekunst has heard his name thrown onto the hot seat amid the Rodgers situation and no one knows what to expect for the franchise moving forward. However, they have actually put together a decent offseason altogether.

During the 2021 NFL Draft, the Packers were able to upgrade their secondary with the addition of first-round cornerback Eric Stokes. They then focused on improving their offensive line and replacing All-Pro center Corey Linsley by selecting Ohio State’s Josh Myers in the second round. Next up, they addressed the wide receiver position by trading up in the third round to select Clemson standout Amari Rodgers.
That’s not a bad draft haul at all and the Packers feel very good about the young talent they brought in.
Not only did they put together a decent actual draft, they also added some guys as undrafted free agents that they are very high on. Among that group of players are safety Christian Uphoff, outside linebacker Carlo Kemp, and offensive lineman Coy Cronk.
All of those guys have a fighting chance to make this roster for Green Bay. They are all talented and many thought they would be drafted. It will be interesting to see if one of them can scrape their way to a roster spot.
Let’s take a look at the one undrafted free agent who will actually end up making the Packers’ 2021 roster.
The Undrafted Free Agent Who Will Make The Roster
If you haven’t heard of Christian Uphoff, prepare to hear about him during training camp. He is a 6-foot-3, 210-pound safety who brings great speed to the field. Uphoff is capable of making plays at a high level and he is a hard hitter.
During the 2020 season with Illinois State prior to the season being canceled for them, he racked up six tackles, two interceptions, and a defended pass. Those numbers were recorded in just three games.
Green Bay is a team that loves to have depth in their secondary. They also like to have safeties play different roles on the field. Just take a look at how the Packers have used Raven Greene over the last couple of years.
Greene left this offseason to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which has left the Packers with a potential void for that role. Uphoff could be a guy that not only makes the roster, but actually plays some snaps in that hybrid safety role that Green Bay likes. He also could end up becoming a great special teams talent.
One NFL scout opened up about what Uphoff could bring to the field for the Packers and thinks he has a real shot to make the roster.
“Good developmental box safety. The kid thought he was going to be Jeremy Chinn but didn’t quite take that final step that Jeremy did. He’s a height/weight/speed guy that’s going to find a way. If he can figure it out on special teams, he’s got a chance to make the roster.”
Everyone knows that undrafted free agents have a very long road ahead of them to make an NFL roster. But, each and every year we hear about a handful who make a name for themselves. Uphoff could be the next in that line.
Gutekunst and the Packers have had success in the past with undrafted free agents. This may not pan out like we are predicting it will, but Uphoff has big-time potential and a ton of raw talent. If he gets coached right and develops the way he is capable of, the Packers might just have a diamond in the rough.
Christian Uphoff is a name that Packers fans will want to keep tabs on. He may not be a star, but he might just be the exact kind of glue role player that every Super Bowl contending defense and special teams unit needs to have on their roster.
