Jon Rahm is the new king at Torrey Pines after winning the 2021 US Open in dramatic fashion Sunday. To pull off the win, Rahm had to come up with a clutch Michael-Jordanesque performance down the stretch, as he made back-to-back birdies in the 17th and 18th holes to secure his first-ever major victory. So what about the Tiger comparisons?

As brought up by Kyle Porter of CBS Sports following the Spaniard’s win, Rahm has made a podium finish in nearly 30 OWGR events.
“The Data Golf folks, those who produce the best strokes-gained numbers, maintain that the models they run and the projections they make about the future only spit out one name at the top and have for a long time. The Tiger comps during Rahm’s meteoric rise as a pro are inevitable, but they’re actually also not all that crazy! Rahm has now finished first, second or third in 27 of his first 122 starts in OWGR events. That is outrageous.”
It should be noted that no player before Rahm had managed to score birdies on both final holes to notch a US Open win and the manner with which he did was simply breathtaking.
The win at Torrey Pines was made even sweeter by the fact that Rahm was forced to withdraw from the 2021 Memorial Tournament earlier this June because of a positive COVID-19 test while he was leading the field in the third round.
As for catching Tiger Woods’ major totals, Rahm has a very long way to go, as Woods has a total of 15 to his name.
