Trevor Lawrence signs ‘unprecedented’ contract

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence has officially signed his first NFL contract, and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports it’s an “unprecedented” deal because of the way it’s set up.

The contract is for four years and $36.8 million, complete with a $24.1 million signing bonus. Lawrence has a fifth-year option on the deal. The “unprecedented” part involves the “language and payment structure.”
More details can be found here:

Trevor Lawrence already passed his physical and will get his signing bonus paid in full within 15 days, per source. The deal, negotiated by @mgcsports, includes no offset language and annual roster bonuses in 2022-2024, which are guaranteed even in the event he’s on active/NFI. https://t.co/z9e3Aj2LNr

It’s no surprise Trevor Lawrence is getting this kind of special contract given what he means to this franchise moving forward. He’s the quarterback of the future after going No. 1 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, and the Jaguars are expecting him to be an elite option under center for a long time. He’s viewed as one of the best quarterback prospects in recent memory.
Lawrence was dominant in his three seasons at Clemson, even though he never won a Heisman Trophy. The young gunslinger won a national championship as a freshman and returned to the College Football Playoff Championship Game as a sophomore, only to struggle in a loss to LSU. Clemson lost to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff Semifinals last year.
The new Jaguars quarterback finished his college career with a 34-2 record, 10,098 yards passing and 90 passing touchdowns to just 17 interceptions.
Jacksonville isn’t that far removed from the AFC Championship Game, but the last three seasons were marred by shoddy quarterback play. The Jaguars went 1-15 in 2021 to get in position to draft Trevor Lawrence, and he’ll be counted on to turn the franchise around.
